Christian Formation for Adults
St. Nick’s offers a variety of adult classes and prayer groups–we hope you will find one or more that meets your needs. And if you have ideas for classes or groups not listed here, please contact The Rev. Shivaun Wilkinson or The Rev. Ken Howard.
Fellowship and Formation Time (10:00am Sunday Morning).
We have found that adults learn best when formation and instruction are provided in several forms, and when the learning approach provides them the opportunity to integrate their spiritual life with the rest of life and to interact with others in the congregation.
Formation Time Opportunities Include:
The Bible and the Sunday News. Come for coffee, donuts and discussion of how faith intersects with current events. No need to sign up, just come!
Bible 101 (Starting Soon). If you prefer a more traditional Bible study with your coffee and donuts, this might be for you. We will be covering various passages and topics from Scripture. Drop-ins welcome!
Formation Programs During the Week
Book Study Groups. Book study groups are held on a regular basis through the church year, generally meeting weekly for 6-8 weeks. Groups generally meet in the evenings either at the church or at a members home. Snacks or dessert are often available, ocassionally a light meal. Past books have ranged from the deeply spiritual to popular fiction. Books are chosen for study by the Adult Spiritual Formation Committee, though they are always looking for suggestions. Education for Ministry (EFM). Deepen your understanding of Scripture, church history and theology in the company of friends. This four year program from the University of the South at Sewanee is a great way to learn and grow. Meets from mid-September to June. Contact: EFM Coordinator.
Adult Membership/Confirmation Education Class. About once a year, we offer an 8-week program designed to help participants learn more about membership at St. Nick’s and in the Episcopal Church. Contact: The Clergy.
Seasonal Offerings. During Lent and at other times during the church year, there are opportunities for Bible study, retreats, and discussion groups. Contact: The Church Office.
